Overview
With an increasing number of openly-identifying lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) student-athletes, it is incumbent on the mental performance consultant (MPC) to be knowledgeable of their experience and provide service that recognizes the impact of their sexual orientation in a traditionally heteronormative environment. The purpose of this presentation will be to educate practitioners on the current landscape in sport for LGB student-athletes based on current research and experience in the field of athletics. We will provide recommendations for how MPCs can support LGB college student-athletes and assist in promoting an inclusive atmosphere on teams and in athletic departments.
Learning Objectives
- Describe how LGB student-athletes have reported experiencing sexual prejudice, discrimination and/or marginalization in sport historically and currently and how that can impact their athletic experience
- Better recognize sexual prejudice and heteronormativity within the sporting environment
- Engage in behaviors that promote inclusion and individually support LGB student-athletes on their team and in their performance
Given the time constraints, this webinar will only address lesbian, gay male, and bisexual athlete experiences. Diverse gender identities and other diverse sexual orientations are beyond the scope of this presentation. AASP plans to offer additional webinars on these identities and experiences in the future.
